Sr. Marguerite Adams, OSB, longtime teacher, dies at 95

ROCK ISLAND -- A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 4 in the chapel of St. Mary Monastery here for Sister Marguerite Adams, OSB. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Sister Marguerite died on Oct. 1, 2013, at the monastery. She was 95.
Born in Peoria on Jan. 28, 1918, Margaret E. Adams was the daughter of John and Verna (Miller) Adams. She attended St. Boniface School and Manual High School in Peoria and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

She entered the Benedictine community on Dec. 8, 1942, at St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo, and made her first profession on Aug. 21, 1944.
Sister Marguerite taught at Sts. Peter and Paul in Nauvoo (1944-45 and 1961-63), St. Roch in LaSalle (1945-49, 1965-66, and 1976-77), Immaculate Conception in Monmouth (1950-52 and 1977-81), St. Mary in Wenona (1952-55), St. Boniface in Peoria (1966-76) and Holy Family in Peoria (1981-90). She also served at St. Columba School in Chicago from 1955 to 1965.

Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bob Adams and Bill Adams, and sister Betty Evelsizer, Sister Marguerite is survived by one sister, Verna Carter; many nieces and nephews; and her Benedictine Sisters, with whom she shared her life for more than 70 years.
